How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses targeted laser energy absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle. The energy converts to heat, damaging the follicle and impairing its ability to produce new hair growth. Because the laser targets the melanin in the follicle, it works best on hairs with sufficient pigment and is most effective on dark hair.

Hair grows in cycles and the laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). This is why multiple sessions are necessary: each session treats the follicles that happen to be in the active phase at that time. After 6 to 8 sessions covering multiple growth cycles, most patients achieve significant and lasting hair reduction.

The safety consideration for diverse skin tones is that the epidermis also contains melanin, and lasers that are too aggressive for darker skin tones can heat the skin surface alongside the follicle, causing burns or PIH. Longer wavelength lasers such as Nd:YAG penetrate past the epidermis to target the follicle at a deeper level, making them significantly safer for Fitzpatrick III to VI skin. At A Younger You Wellness Medspa, Quynh selects the appropriate laser and adjusts all parameters for your specific skin tone before treatment begins.

Neurotoxin Treatment Areas at A Younger You Wellness Medspa

Forehead Lines

Horizontal lines across the forehead that deepen with age and expression. Neurotoxin relaxes the frontalis muscle that causes these lines, smoothing the forehead while preserving enough movement for natural expression. Dosing is critical: too much in this area flattens the brow and creates a heavy appearance.

Frown Lines (Glabellar Lines)

The vertical lines between the brows, often called the 11s, created by the corrugator and procerus muscles. These are among the strongest muscles in the face and require accurate dosing to relax effectively. Treating this area softens the resting expression without affecting the ability to raise the brows or show natural emotion.

Crow's Feet

The radiating lines at the outer corners of the eyes that deepen with squinting and smiling. Neurotoxin placed in the orbicularis oculi muscle reduces the depth of these lines while maintaining the appearance of a natural smile.

Brow Lift

Strategic placement of neurotoxin can create a subtle lift of the lateral brow by relaxing the muscles that depress it. This is one of the most technique-dependent applications of neurotoxin and requires precise anatomical knowledge to achieve a natural result.

Lip Flip

A small amount of neurotoxin placed in the orbicularis oris muscle above the upper lip allows the lip to roll slightly outward, creating the appearance of more lip volume without the use of filler. Often combined with lip filler for optimal results.

Bunny Lines

The diagonal lines that appear on the sides of the nose with certain expressions. Treated with small amounts of neurotoxin in the nasalis muscle.

Chin Dimpling

Pebbling or dimpling of the chin skin caused by overactivity of the mentalis muscle. Neurotoxin smooths the chin surface for a more refined appearance.

Neck Bands (Platysmal Bands)

Visible vertical bands in the neck caused by the platysma muscle. Neurotoxin placed along these bands reduces their visibility and can improve the overall neckline appearance without surgery.

HOW IT WORKS

What to Expect

Preparation:

Shave the treatment area 24 hours before. No waxing, threading, or plucking for 4 to 6 weeks before treatment as these remove the follicle the laser targets. Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area.

Session:

15 to 60 minutes depending on area. Cooling applied with each pulse. Mild heat sensation during treatment. Most patients find it very tolerable.

Post-Treatment:

Mild redness for a few hours. Hair in treated follicles sheds over the following 1 to 3 weeks. No significant downtime.

Session:

6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for the face. 8 to 10 for body areas in some patients.

The Evidence Behind Neurotoxin Treatment

Citation 1
This foundational paper established the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin type A for cosmetic use in the upper face, documenting consistent reduction of dynamic wrinkles with a well-characterized side effect profile. The authors established the anatomical approach to injection that remains the foundation of modern neurotoxin practice.
Citation 2
This review documented the dose-response relationship of botulinum toxin in facial muscles and confirmed that individualized dosing based on muscle anatomy produces superior outcomes compared to standardized unit protocols. This is the clinical basis for Quynh anatomy-first approach to neurotoxin dosing at A Younger You Wellness Medspa.

EXPECTATIONS AND FIT

Laser hair removal produces permanent hair reduction in the vast majority of patients who complete their treatment course. Results vary by hair color, skin tone, and individual follicle response.

A strong fit for patients who:

  • Want long-term or permanent reduction in unwanted hair
  • Have Asian or darker skin and want a provider who uses the appropriate laser and settings for their skin tone
  • Have dark, coarse hair that responds most effectively to laser energy
  • Are committing to the full treatment series for optimal results

This may not be the right approach if:

  • You have light, fine, or grey hair. Laser hair removal requires melanin in the follicle to work effectively. Very light or white hair does not respond well.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have active tanning or significant UV exposure in the treatment area.
